You knew that beyond this world of flesh and bone, laws set in stone and realities too inflexible to test beyond what we can know lies another, separated from ours by the thinnest of veils. You knew this like you knew your own name, for you had felt the other world lurking in the shadows, moving playfully just at the very edge of your vision, slithering like a coil of snakes behind your conscious mind. At night, you dreamt of the world beyond, its mind-breaking geometries, impossible spirals and of the countless indescribable horrors that dwelled therein, all calling your name.

You sought for years and then at long last found the place where you could open a window, or perhaps a door, to that other world and peer finally into the heart of darkness. You lit the candles, recited the incantations, performed the ritual and made the necessary sacrifices, no matter how painful, to open the gates – to finally, after years of suffering in the thrall of creeping madness, experience the very essence of it first-hand.

As the Book of the Inverted Cross told you: “But they that wait upon the Devil shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as bats; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

You will open the gate. She will be waiting for you.
